Urban Ministry Retreat

Leader: The Reverend Canon Dr. Sandye A. Wilson, Rector of St. Andrew and Holy Communion Episcopal Church in South Orange, New Jersey

Urban Ministry in the Diocese of New Jersey is sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with all who live or work in our urban centers by preaching, teaching and advocating in the power of the Holy Spirit.  Given this stated vision, in this all day retreat with prayers and reflections, we will:

o revisit why we are called to this ministry
o reconnect to our primary purpose which is mission
o recommit to our ministries in urban centers
o reaffirm the transformational power of this ministry if we are givers as well as receivers

The Reverend Sandye Wilson is rector of St. Andrew and Holy Communion Episcopal Church in South Orange, New Jersey. Her church work includes experience in urban, suburb an and rural settings, from small towns to major cities. She is currently a member ofDiocesan Council, The Good Liturgy Committee, a member of the Commission on Ministry, a Co-president of the South Orange/Maplewood Clergy Association, a member of the Diocesan Women’s Commission, a leader of the Black Church Initiative on Congregational Development, a deputy to the Episcopal Church’s 2009 National General Convention and Chair of the Deputation. A creative liturgist and congregational development specialist, she has rebuilt congregations, consulted with congregations and led retreats around the country on new life in the Spirit. Passionate about social justice as a gospel mandate, she has been trained by the Industrial Area Foundation in community organizing and development. Clear about the need for boundaries in life, she has done advanced graduate work in Friedman and Bowen Family Systems Analysis. A powerful preacher, she has had opportunities to share the Good News in all kinds of settings around the world, most recently serving as keynoter and Bible group leader for the 50th anniversary celebration of the National Christian Youth Conference of the Uniting Church of Australia in January, 2005.
