The Nurse Refresher Course is a continuing education course designed to assist the RN or LPN interested in returning to clinical practice. All participants must be currently or have been previously been licensed as an RN or LPN in the U.S.

The focus of the course is on the practice of medical-surgical nursing. College credit is not provided.

The course consists of three components:

1.                         Self Study Modules - theory portion of the home-study

2.                         Skills Lab Day

3.                         Clinical rotation

The self study modules are the initial step in completing this program. This portion of the program, is an independent self-study, in that instructor involvement is minimal. There are no scheduled classroom sessions. Modules must be completed within the semester due dates. It is the student's responsibility to pace their progress and turn assignments in as scheduled. All course requirements must be completed within the academic semester for which the student is registered. Individuals cannot carry over course work into another semester. Late assignments will not be accepted. Assignments are pass fail, except for Pharmacology Exam and Final Exam, for which 75% is passing.

The skills lab consists of a 1-2 hour lecture/discussion and a 5-6 hour lab that will allow work with an instructor to practice nursing skills; blood pressure monitoring, venipuncture, naso-gastric tube insertion, etc. The Nursing Skills Lab at Clarkson College is designed to provide realistic hands-on practice for students in an area that simulates a variety of realistic medical facility environments. There are numerous resources available to facilitate group or individual learning. Students will have access to several realistic mannequins and models allowing them to practice skills needed in todays advanced health care settings.

The clinical rotation will provide an overview of patient care and will be provided under the direction of a clinical instructor, at an appropriate medical facility. Nurse refresher students will be oriented to the facility and will be providing patient care. A minimum of 45 hours of clinical (minus lunches and breaks) is required to complete the Clarkson College Nurse Refresher Program. Clinical schedules may change due to availability of space. Everyone will be informed as soon as possible of any date changes.
