Paraeducators working in diverse classroom settings are invited to attend. The second part of this training will be held on Friday, August 20, 2010, from 8:30 - 11:30 AM. Participants should plan on attending both days. Anyone (therapists, teachers, paraeducators, district staff, etc.) is welcome to attend. There is a book fee of approximately $8.00.

Executive functions are the cognitive processes that occur in the frontal lobe of the brain that allows us to make decisions, control impulses, organize, pay attention and plan. This strand will explore brain-based research in executive functioning, outline practical strategies teachers and parents can use to improve their student's executive functioning and teach you how to implement these strategies through assessment and intervention.

CHAMPS assists classroom teachers and school personnel to design (or fine tune) a proactive and positive classroom management plan that will overtly teach students how to behave responsibly. Participants will learn about the CHAMPS program so that they can use some of the strategies with students and/or they can consult with teachers who would like to improve their classroom management.

The list of potential interventions that can be used with students on the autism spectrum is long and overwhelming. This strand will provide an overview of promising, questionable and refuted interventions including ABA, TEACCH, RDI, video modeling, social stories, sensory integration and PECS. We will discuss how to select and monitor appropriate interventions as well as outline the core elements in a comprehensive program for students with autism.
