February 2/15/2010 An Introduction to Igor

An Introduction to Igor: Ionia and Montcalm Counties are part of a regional data initiative grant through Kent ISD that supplies a data warehouse tool for all districts. This data warehouse for our counties is called Igor. In this introductory session, educators will be provided a login and password to access their school or district’s data, take a walk through the various components of the program, and have time to explore the data reports that are available.

New legislation for PD mandates that teachers & administrators participate in 5 hrs of online PD beginning Fall of 2010. Join presenter Susan Laninga as she leads participants through Learnport – Michigan’s free option for meeting these hours. Learn how to create an account, investigate all the possible sessions, and learn how to register and complete courses. Additionally, participants will learn how to use netTrekker–an online source for curriculum and other classroom resources.

This training will provide an overview of the sensory systems. Techniques will be given as well as opportunities to practice using successful strategies for supporting the sensory system. In addition, various accommodations, modifications, and teaching strategies will be discussed that when used in a classroom results in success for many students. Event is held at Montcalm Area ISD in Stanton from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Lunch is included.
3/9/2010 Effective Feedback and Student Motivation

Investigate with assessment trainer, Michelle Goodwin, the positive power of descriptive feedback. This workshop will examine the research on feedback including the type of feedback that should be given for maximum student achievement growth and motivation as well as its frequency. Using effective feedback is a small change that can lead to large gains.
3/10/2010 Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment in Service-Learning

Follow up only for teachers that participated in the 2009 K-12 summer curriculum development project. Please come prepared to discuss the implementation of your unit. Bring questions, artifacts, etc to share in the morning. Work time will be provided in the afternoon for planning, creating, and developing either your existing project or a new project. Substitute costs will be covered.

This youth-led workshop introduces the participant to service-learning REMIX style. Participants will dig deep to figure out their talent and passions. They will learn how to implement the service-learning standards with the arts such as spoken-word, hip-hop, visual arts, and dancing to bring about change in their communities. Definitions of service-learning are re-vamped and updated to reflect the next generation. This is a great workshop for bringing a student or two with you.

Participants will learn the specific steps to develop a peer to peer support program for students with ASD educated in a center program and those placed on resource and cross-categorical caseloads. This training will give educators another tool to improve the support throughout the school day. 3/17/2010 Expanding Expression: A Multi-Sensory Approach for Improved Oral and Written Language

The Expanding Expression Toolkit provides students with a hands-on approach to help students access language skills and provides a structure for struggling readers and writers to organize information. It can be used by students of any age and helps build skills and oral and written expression, vocabulary comprehension, and finding similarities and differences.
